Snowboarder Issue 3 2010
Welcome to the final installment of Australian Snowboarder Magazine for 2010. This issue has a focus on the big, wide world of global snowboard travel.
First stop is Niskeo, Japan as Liam Kaska teams up with fellow photographer Lee Ponzio. Together these two photographic stalwarts put their heads together to create some of the most eye pleasing and colourful pow turns ever shot at night. They even reveal the formula involved in getting the shot.
Next up we venture to European shores as Jye Kearney embarks on his first trip to the peaks of Austria. Full of youthful enthusiasm, we gain a seldom scene insight into the mindset of a first timer in a foreign land. Different foods, flavours, rules and regulations all come up trumps for Jye.
California’s Los Angeles area is famous for it’s beaches, skateparks, fashion, nightlife, traffic and in snowboarding realms it’s mountains too. Sean Radich put together a team of crack commandos to invade and plunder all that LA has to offer. Darragh Walsh, Pete Long and Jake McCarthy were quick to enlist on this mission and were rewarded handsomely for their efforts.
Sitting at approximately the same latitude as the Eastern Canadian hot spots of Montreal and Ottawa, the Minneapolis region of Minnesota has become the latest discovery to be deemed rich in urban jib potential. While the rails of Minneapolis have recently been documented by the US snowboarding media, the area still remained virgin territory for Aussie riders. That was until Jye Kearney, Charles Beckinsale and Mikey Willams showed up.
The secret about Japan has well and truly been out for a while now. The northern island of Hokkaido has been adopted as a second home by a lot of travelling Aussie snowboarders. For those who seek, there still remain some untouched and unchartered resorts. Together with Ben Fawcett and Jake McCarthy, we investigate what the resort of Tomamu has to offer.
To compliment our Travel Issue we also provide our readers with 10 Essential Travel Tips to ensure they get the most out of their next snowboarding holiday. From advice on destinations, travel partners, excess baggage and everything else in between, a snowboard holiday has never looked more appealing.
Also included in this issue is a brief chat with Michaela Davis Meehan who is recovering from a broken back. She fills us in on her staggering medical costs and the importance of travel insurance. We also introduce you to Marty Novy and Dane Tiene, two riders you’ll be hearing a lot more about in years to come and profile what luggage options are available for the jet setting snowboard traveler.
Until next year…
