Frying Pan Inn Coca Cola Big Air at Falls Creek - 14th August 2010
On the 14th of August 2010 the annual Falls Creek Big Air event will be back to it’s original position, out the front of the Frying Pan Inn. This year the event is sponsored by the Frying Pan Inn, Coca Cola and presented by Chiko Roll.
“Known for it’s unique jam event format, riders get more jumps than in any other competition” explains Jason Currie, a local snowboarding celebrity. “It’s the atmosphere I come back for, it’s just like riding with mates, there is a friendly rivalry where we are all pushing each other to go harder”.
“Launching off a kicker on Summit, the 50 ski and snowboarding enthusiasts will be under pressure to impress a board of 3 judges and the crowd”, said Zuzka Vondracek, event organiser, “The Big Air really is a fantastic visual event, especially with the finals being held under lights”.
Mat Galina from Canada knows the Big Air well “the judges are marking on execution, difficulty, variety, style, hang time, and landings” and according to Currie and Galina it’s the landing that’s the key.
With $12,000 worth of cash and prizes up for grabs, it’s going to be competitive. The crowd is sure to be impressed with some big names such as Mikey Rosalky rumoured to be back to defend his title.
“With the combined score of two runs that riders must nominate it’s the most consistent competitor who takes it out on the day not just the lucky one” Said Vondracek “In other events you only need to have one great jump but in this one you really have to get both” agreed Galina.
Currie sees the Big Air as a great progressive opportunity, “the jump is manageable for advancing athletes ready to be challenged and test their limits, but still gives professionals the opportunity to really shine”.
According to Galina we can “expect to see 720s in all directions, underflips and backside rodeos and a couple of switch 9’s from the skiers”.
The Dragon sponsored after party will kick on at The Frying Pan Inn with the famous Ice Bars and a DJ to entertain long after the radical colour smeared skiers and boarders are grounded.
It’s one thing to watch someone strap two feet into a snowboard, hit a massive kicker and fly like that, but if you want to have a go or just a go at twelve grand this time you can. Submit your entry fee of $44 per competitor into the Falls Creek Race and Events Office by 4pm Friday 13th August, and you too can gain street cred.
