Waxing your board not only helps you ride faster, but at the same time it also protects your base. Waxing aids in reducing the friction on the base
of your board when riding, thus PROTECTING your base by reducing its wear and tear.

To do this procedure you will need an iron (not to be used on clothes again), a scraper (a piece of Perspex is best with a sharp edge), some snowboard wax (a broad temperature wax is adequate), a green kitchen scourer, and a citrus cleaner is handy to have as well to clean your base with. The whole process is best done in the yard or garage and not on Mum’s new carpet.

Dirty wax is usually a more common occurrence in spring when you’ve been riding melted, slushy snow. If your existing wax is dirty, scrape it all off and use the citrus cleaner and scourer to clean the base. (Refer to Picture 1)

The process of waxing should follow after detuning and edging. Put your board base up on two stools or something stable that stands at about waist height. Using an iron on medium heat, place the wax in contact with the bottom of the iron, holding them both on a downward angle so the wax drips on to the board and not on to you. The wax should slowly drip off the iron. If wax is pouring off and smoking profusely your iron is most probably too hot. Drip wax around the edge of the board an inch or so apart, working inwards. Remember you can always add more later.  (Refer to Picture 2)

Use the iron to smear the drops together roughly, moving the iron quickly over the base of the board to form a liquid-like finish. Continue working around the board until it is covered. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT THE IRON DOES NOT STAY IN ONE PLACE FOR TOO LONG OR THAT YOU DON’T PUT TOO MUCH HEAT INTO ONE AREA OR YOU WILL WRECK YOUR BOARD. Do one final slower pass across the board. (Refer to Pictures 3 & 4)

Let the wax cool for a few minutes and then take to it with the Perspex scraper. The idea is that you want to scrape all the excess wax off. While this may seem like a waste having just waxed your board, it will ensure your board goes faster. (Refer to Pictures 5, 6 & 7)

Brush the base with the scourer from the tip to tail to clean off the excess wax scraping and you're ready to ride again. (Refer to Pictures 8 & 9)
