Dane Tiene

Lip Stall
Breckenridge, Colorado

Rider: Dane Tiene

"I'm not gunna lie, this is the dumbest thing that I've ever done. The boys and I started building for the stall, there was no way I wanted to go over the edge. Even getting to the stall was a mission, all the wood leading up to it was rotten so we Jimmy-rigged some old roof panels and metal slats to make the run in. I was a bit nervous but on my second hit I got the shot. I was pretty relieved it was over, I think everyone was scared for my life. Stoked! I got my first front cover. ."

"This is without a doubt my favourite shot from last season. I'd been shooting with Dane a bit during the winter and when i received a tip off about this place i knew he'd be in a list of riders to invite out there. We first visited this abandoned mine at the beginning of March along with Lance Rees and Courtney Phillipson to see if there was anything worth shooting. It was a logistical nightmare to get around as we had to break about a km of tracks with snow up to our waist each step. When we finally made it up there it took less than 5 minutes for Dane to call it and make his intentions known.

We ran out of time that day so planned to return to shoot it the following day. The weather set in and it was a further 2 weeks until we headed back there with lots of wondering if it was possible during the time between. By the end of March we finally made it back to the spot which was exactly how we'd left it. It was the strangest atmosphere that morning because i think everyone had realised the consequences if it went wrong. There's no hidden angles to this image, Dane would have fallen straight down into that truck if he'd have gone over. Using a bungee cord to gain speed he rolled up to it once and then shouted down it would work. It only took 2 attempts after that to get it nailed. Lance and Jack Carlin were on the Bungee and Courtney was hiding next to my flashes ready to try and grab him if it went wrong. I headed back up to find everyone in stunned silence and as we checked over the image we knew that it was in the shot bank and could be done with it. Relief to not have to try it again was plain to see all round.

Mad props have to go to Dane for this shot. He came up with the idea and had the balls to pull it off. This is my first cover shot and is definitely one that will stay with me. Camera wise this was shot with a Canon 5d, ISO 100, 58mm, f14. 1/200 sec. 2 Alien Bees AB400 were behind him on full power with the Colorado sun doing its thing in front."
